Between 19 and 21 January 2021, the 20th INTOSAI Working Group on Environmental Auditing (WGEA) Assembly took place. This year’s meeting was organised by the SAI Finland and was titled Rethinking Circularity!
The first day of the Assembly meeting was thus dedicated to the presentation of the concept of circular economy and to the discussion on the possibility of applying this concept to the audit work, thereby deriving from the contributions of key international experts from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Finnish Innovation Fund Sitra.
Next on the agenda of the last two days were the following issues: plastic waste, international climate finance, sustainable transport, environment-related Sustainable Development Goals, capacity building and communication. The participants also had the chance to share relevant audit experiences and suggest ideas for further work and projects. The discussions were among others held by the experts of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), with the extra focus given to the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the environment and the value of systemic thinking.
The Assembly meeting takes place every two years and is intended for all INTOSAI members and other interested WGEA stakeholders. This year, the meeting took the online form for the first time.
