The 30th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP30) recently took place in Belém, Brazil. During the conference, the INTOSAI Working Group on Environmental Auditing (WGEA) organised two side events, based on the results of the recently implemented joint project of global cooperative audit of climate change adaptation actions in which also the Court of Audit of the Republic of Slovenia participated. As part of the conference, the Supreme Audit Institution (SAI) of Brazil hosted several events related to the ClimateScanner tool, while INTOSAI had its own pavilion for the first time.
Additionally, the conference dealt with the question “Why do climate adaptation plans fail – and how can auditors help fix them?” In the thereto related thought-provoking session, calling for more effectiveness for adaptation, participated Mirey Atallah, Chief of the Adaptation and Resilience Branch within the United Nations Environment Programme, as a keynote speaker, as well as representatives of the United Nations Development Programme, the National Adaptation Plan (NAP) Global Network and the INTOSAI Development Initiative (IDI). During the event, audit institutions from Argentina, Canada, Indonesia, the Marshall Islands and the Pacific Association of Supreme Audit Institutions (PASAI) presented their audit cases on the concerned matter, with the Court of Audit of the Republic of Slovenia presenting its audit of efficiency of reducing the flood risks.
The session was framed around the recently published international publication Global Climate Adaptation Audits for a Resilient Future: Lessons and recommendations from Supreme Audit Institutions focusing on the key findings from over 50 performance audits on climate adaptation.
