Critical environmental challenges related to water highlights of the INTOSAI WGEA Assembly

Between 1 and 3 July 2025, the 23rd Assembly meeting of the INTOSAI Working Group on Environmental Auditing (WGEA) under the motto Auditing Our Blue Planet was held in Malta. The Assembly discussed critical environmental challenges related to water, focusing on the marine environment and water scarcity from the perspectives of drought and drinking water availability. The event brought together 115 delegates from 46 supreme audit institutions (SAI) from around the globe, among active participants was also the Court of Audit of the Republic of Slovenia.

The programme of the Assembly featured sessions on the meeting topic and provided opportunities to exchange information related to the INTOSAI WGEA work. The first day of the programme focused on the main topic of the meeting, Auditing Our Blue Planet. It included sessions with keynote speeches and panel discussions. The program was complemented with audit cases and actual practices of supreme audit institutions. Among others, joint audit report on effective management of marine protected areas within the Mediterranean Sea was presented. This audit was implemented in cooperation with 7 EUROSAI WGEA member states, including the Court of Audit of the Republic of Slovenia who shared its findings from the audit report on efficient management of St Jernej Canal referring to supervision procedures. The Court of Audit also performed a follow-up audit on the concerned issue.

The second day included parallel sessions related to the topic of water and the INTOSAI WGEA 2023–2025 Projects under the two thematic hubs: Climate & Biodiversity and Green Economy. Ms Lejla Marinko, Principal Auditor at the Court of Audit, presented the audit report Efficiency of long-term drinking water resources conservation in the Republic of Slovenia and a case study from the concerned audit supported by the updated data from the 2023–2027 Water Management Plan. Additionally, Ms Marinko joined a participatory workshop on international cooperative audit pertaining to measures for climate adaptation (Climate Change Adaptation Actions – CCAA). Slovenian Court of Audit actively participates in the CCAA project with the audit on efficiency in reducing the risk of flooding. The participants of the workshop also discussed the substantive highlights of the CCAA project.

The official programme of the Assembly concluded with the WGEA Business meeting, addressing the 2023–2025 and 2026–2028 activities of the WGEA. The last day also featured the WGEA Award and the handover of the Chairmanship to SAI Thailand.
