President of the Court of Audit, Tomaž Vesel, presented the report on the operations of the Court of Audit in 2017 to the President of the National Assembly, dr. Milan Brglez. He underlined some important public finance issues, such as difficulties in absorption of the EU funds, optimisation of processes, especially in the field of health, unresolved issues of environmental protection and organisation of commercial public services.
President Vesel stressed that it is vital to protect the independence of the Court of Audit in future, in terms of providing sufficient funds for the operation of the Court. Another particularly sensitive area of the auditing process are sanctions imposed by the Court of Audit – to effectively remedy irregularities from the past and to efficiently guide future activities.
Therefore, radical rethinking about the audit powers of the Court is needed. The discussion of the presidents involved exchange of opinions related to audits of banking sector that demands clarification of certain areas, particularly as they have an important impact on public funds and that were not audited in the past. President Vesel drew attention to the urgent need to amend Public Finance Act.
