Member of the European Court of Auditors (ECA) mag. Jorg Kristijan Petrovič met with the President of the Court of Audit of the Republic of Slovenia Jana Ahčin on Tuesday, 17 March 2026, in Ljubljana to present Annual Reports of the ECA for 2024. At the meeting, there were also Deputy Presidents of the Court of Audit mag. Maja Bilbija and mag. Aleksej Šinigoj.
Every year, the ECA audits the revenue and expenditure of the EU budget and issues an opinion on the extent to which the annual accounts are reliable, and income and spending comply with the relevant rules and regulations. ECA’s auditors test samples of transactions to provide statistically-based estimates of the extent to which revenue and the various spending areas are affected by error (the error rate).
The total EU payments amounted to EUR 247 billion in 2024: EUR 191.1 billion was spent from the EU budget, and a further EUR 55.9 billion from the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF). The ECA provided two separate opinions on the legality and regularity of expenditure: one on the EU budget and one on the RRF.
The estimated error rate for the expenditure from the EU budget has decreased, but it remains a concern, according to the ECA’s auditors. In the annual report the ECA’s auditors pointed out risks posed by the growing burden from borrowing obligations and the consequences of these for future EU budgets and actions. Considering the current debates on the next EU budgetary period from 2028 onwards the ECA’s auditors call for greater focus on measuring performance, transparency and accountability.
